What makes this fort distinct?

Fort XIIIa Zabłocie is a well-preserved earthwork example of an infantry fort designed for close defence. The National Institute of Cultural Heritage describes it as having scientific and landscape value, and as a monument of European significance.

The fort has a semicircular plan and a dry moat with a flattened slope. Surviving earthworks include the rampart, traces of positions for field guns or machine guns, a rampart protecting the barracks, a gate-defending bastion and the rear area.

Among the masonry features are the entrance gate and its original barrier fittings, ruins of the central barracks, a central shelter and a covered passage that served as a readiness shelter. That passage has two exits to positions on the rampart.

The site’s greenery was part of its concealment. Front, rear and side screens helped mask the fort’s low profile among the San River’s riparian greenery, bends and oxbow lakes. Field fortification trenches are visible among the surrounding greenery, and part of the original access road survives in reconstructed form.

The present fort was built from 1901 to 1903, after an earlier earth battery at the site was levelled. That battery, numbered 11a and named “Wyszatyce,” had been built in 1888 during an expansion of the fortress.

The fort was assigned to the Bolestraszyce defensive sector, with a garrison of half an infantry company. In 1909, it was armed with two 9 cm M.75/96 field guns.
